Recently appointed to host the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area, Ghana is on a revolutionary track. Their nomination as host has certainly drawn international attention, including that of the social media platform, Twitter. 

In a Twitter blog published on April 12, 2021, the company announced that it is actively building a team in Ghana where it will also establish a headquarters. Twitter’s decision to establish its center in the democratic nation sheds a positive light on Ghana’s efforts to open its nation to the freedom of expression. Twitter stated, “as a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate.”

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo quickly retweeted the news, expressing his gratitude and excitement for the start of this “beautiful partnership”: “these are exciting times to be in, and to do business in Ghana.” (BBC, 2021).
